Texas Car Insurance FAQ

As you use our FREE Texas car insurance quote tool, the answers to these questions will help guide you towards finding the right Texas car insurance company and policy.

1) Who exactly will be
covered on the policy?

Not every Texas car insurance company may have the same definition of "family member." Find out from your representative if there are any parameters. If you have separated or divorced from your partner, ask about those provisions, as well as any other life changes that may affect the people listed on your policy.

2) What exactly will and will not
be covered by the policy?

Make sure you are completely aware of everything that is covered by the policy, and any conditions that may cause an incident to be excluded. Ask your representative if there's special coverage for anything of value in the car, such as easily removable music equipment or ornamental enhancements.

3) Are there any deductibles?

The first page of your policy is known as the declarations page. This page lists the car insurance's contact information, your contact information and policy number, and every detail of your policy, including the coverage amounts, and what your deductibles are, if any. Always make sure that everything listed is correct, and notify the company immediately if something needs to be revised.

4) Must there be a separate policy per car?

Yes. Texas requires that every car have a policy. Usually the policy for an additional car will simply and automatically just copy the policy already existing on the primary car, unless otherwise preferred and needed by the policy holder. And even if the additional car is not yet being used because it's still awaiting reconditioning or some other factor, it still needs to have insurance on it.

5) Is car insurance really necessary,
even with an absolutely
perfect driving record?

Yes! If you're driving a car in Texas, you must have insurance and the consequences for not having any, or not having enough, can be extremely detrimental. You can be fined as much as $350 for the first driving violation without car insurance, and not only does the fines increase with the next offense, but the third can also lead to the loss of your license, and possibly the car. Having been uninsured can also affect your policy's rates once you do get insurance. Also, as part of Texas' Driver Responsibility Program (DRP), the points lost on your license can still accrue fines for three more additional years. If you do have a perfect driving record, talk to your insurance rep about possible policy discounts.

6) Is car insurance still necessary
if I do not own a car,
but only rent as needed?

Although you can take insurance on a car from the rental agency itself, if you do frequently rent cars, you might want to consider having an Automobile Rental Liability Policy from a Texas insurance company. It's specifically designed for drivers who do not own cars and thus have no standard policies.

7) Can I be denied car insurance
because of a poor
credit report and score?

No. Car insurance companies in Texas will review your credit history during application for coverage to check on how you have handled financial obligations. However, a poor report and score cannot be cause for denial. If anything, the low score may contribute to a higher insurance rate.

8) Can I lose car insurance because
of an accident or incident
completely out of my control?

Accidents caused by severe weather, animals (a deer running across the road), and other obvious incidents where there was no possibility of avoidance, cannot cause you to lose insurance. There however may be reviews of just how often you find yourself in certain situations to see if it is excessive. If it is determined to be excessive then there may be penalties.
