Texas Car Insurance Policy

Liability Coverage

You know that basic liability coverage for Texas car insurance is mandatory. As of April 2008, the minimum requirement you need to be insured for will be known as the 25/50/25, meaning $25,000 coverage for a person in an accident caused by anyone on your policy, $50,000 for more than two people in an accident, and $25,000 for damages incurred by an accident. The allotted monies may also go towards the injured party's rental of a car while awaiting repairs, lost wages, as well as attorney fees for the defendant. If you have car insurance from another state and have recently moved to Texas, your policy must meet Texas requirements.

Collision Coverage

In addition to liability car insurance, if you do not own your vehicle, (you make payments to a leasing agent or company), you must also have collision and comprehensive coverage. Collision coverage tends to the costs incurred by an accident, including the market value of the vehicle (prior to damages) once your deductible has been subtracted.

Comprehensive Coverage

Comprehensive coverage tends to damage costs incurred by means other than a collision, the cost of a rental car as you await repairs, and market value minus the deductible, as well as expenses related if your car is stolen, as long as the theft has been reported to the authorities. With this in mind, let our FREE Texas car insurance quote tool show you the figures involved!

Other Types Of Coverage

Other than the three listed above, there are five more types of car insurance under the Texas Automobile Personal Policy, to be considered.

1) Medical Payment: This is coverage not addressed by health insurance, for everyone in your car at the time of the incident.

2) Personal Injury Protection (PIP): This covers 80% of lost wages or the cost of a caregiver, in addition to the basic medical payments. You must take a minimum of $2500, and if you opt not to take any, you must put that refusal in writing.

3) Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM): coverage for everyone in your car at the time of the incident, caused by an uninsured or under insured driver. There is no deductible for bodily injuries, but a $250 deductible for vehicular damages. The expenses will only be covered if the incident is reported to authorities, and like PIP, you must put your rejection of this type of coverage in writing.

4) Towing & Labor: This will cover any towing and labor expenses you may incur.

5) Rental Reimbursement: This coverage provides a certain amount per day to be used towards renting a car while awaiting repairs or replacement.

If you and/or anyone on your policy has a clean driving record, ask about an "accident forgiveness" policy, which may allow little to no surcharges or penalties should someone be involved in a vehicular misfortune.

And speaking of other family members on your policy, should your child leave home to attend school out of state, you should still maintain covering him or her even for when they're visiting back home and need to use the car. If your out of state student will be using a car while living away from home, make sure your policy is adjusted accordingly.
