Texas Car Insurance Rates

What is the rate of a car insurance policy in Texas? You can get an idea by clicking on our FREE Texas car insurance rate tool!

Once you have chosen a representative, be prepared to have a very honest discussion about your driving and financial history. This is some of the criteria that will be reviewed for your application for coverage.

Factors Influencing Your Texas
Car Insurance Rates

1) Your Driving Record: The insurance company will want to know if you have ever had any violations or criminal negligence that resulted in points lost on your license, or suspension or revocation of your license, as well as how long you have been driving.

2) Previous Insurance Claims: These came be claims that you have made or claims that have been made against you.

3) Your Insurance History: Have you ever been uninsured in Texas, or has your policy been cancelled or not renewed?

4) Your Credit Score: This provides the insurance company with a general idea of how you've met your financial obligations.

5) Type Of Car: The sportier or more performance enhanced the car is, the more likely the increase in premium on your insurance policy.

5) Where The Car Is Kept: Urban areas usually have higher crime rates, which may also increase the premium.

6) The Condition Of The Car: Is the car brand new? Is it a restored car? Does the car have antitheft and safety features?

7) Number Of Cars: The insurance company will want to know how many cars you want to put on your policy.

8) Your Age: Rates may vary for adolescent and for more mature drivers.

9) Who Is To Be Included On The Policy: Will you be including your spouse or teenage drivers on the policy? The rate for a new adolescent driver in a multi-car household is usually based on which car he or she will primarily use, and if there is no particular distinction, then the most expensive of the options.

10) Primary Use of Car: Do you do a lot of traveling with this car? If so, is it for business or pleasure? Is the car used mainly for common everyday uses (errands, school, to and from work, etc.)?

Even if some of your answers are not exactly favorable, perhaps you had financial hardships and fell behind on bills, or have gotten a lot of tickets or citations, it's still better to disclose and discuss that information. A representative who later discovers that your answers did not match the facts might treat the situation even harder than the actual incident would have warranted.

Since insurers are required to disclose all information pertaining to your policy, make sure you find out who your payments are going to. Financing through the company will be less expensive then if there is another party. You of course do not have to accept financing through your insurance company, and can go with the financial terms of the premium financer instead. Any company that does offer the option of choosing another financial institution though, including TAIPA, will provide you with a comparison chart so that you can see the differences in payment before making your decision. Should you choose the other party, you must sign a statement that you were aware of your financial options.

Keep in mind that through your own insurance company for a six month policy in Texas, you will have four payments due after making a 33.33% down payment. If your policy is for a year, there will be ten payments after a 16.67% down payment. TAIPA requires 20% down. A premium financer will add interest to each installment payment (after the initial down payment is made to your car insurance representative). The Texas Department of Insurance does not mandate companies' rates. They can intervene if rates are unreasonably excessive, but otherwise they simply require that company guidelines be filed and updated.
